Department of Emergency Medical Science

We educate students to become emergency medical technicians who are sincere, creative, and possess a sense of challenge, enabling them to play an active role in society.

Emergency medical technicians are expected to obtain national certification and work for fire departments and public agencies (e.g., tha Coast Guard). They intubate tracheas, administer drugs, and play a crucial role in the field of emergency lifesaving. Furthermore, in recent years, they are also expected to play an active role in medical institutions such as hospitals. The Department is committed to providing quality education through faculty members who have abundant experience in the field as well as strong academic backgrounds as researchers.

Curriculum

The Department of Emergency Medical Science trains students to become paramedics equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to play an active role not only in medical emergencies and disasters but also in medical institutions. Our program emphasizes a compassionate heart, ethical standards as medical professionals, and an empathetic attitude toward the entire family, including the sick, injured, and patients.
A “paramedic” is a professional licensed by the Minister of Health, Labour, and Welfare to provide emergency medical care under the direction of a physician. To become a paramedic, one must pass the national paramedic examination and receive a license from the Minister of Health, Labour, and Welfare. Students in the Department of Emergency Medical Science must acquire the necessary knowledge and skills and fulfill graduation requirements to be eligible to take the national paramedic examination.

Curriculum Flow

Year 1

Know What to Study and Think About the Subjects That Are Right for You

Students learn about a wide range of medical and welfare fields through the “Iryojin Sokojikara Education”program, which provides education for medical professionals. They get an overview of learning through specialized education and select courses that are suitable for them.

Year 2

Improve Professionalism

Based on the basic knowledge learned in the first year, students intensively take highly specialized courses in emergency medicine.

Year 3

Learn the Realities of Clinical Settings and Emergencies

Students receive clinical training and ride-along training on emergency vehicles at off-campus medical institutions or at fire and emergency scenes with the cooperation of emergency medical centers and fire departments in Mie Prefecture.

Year 4

Work Toward Acquiring National Licenses

Students culminate their studies by preparing to pass the national paramedic examination and the civil service examination for firefighters, among others.
